Sample 1
Licorice (Glycyrrhiza Glabra)
This herb has been cultivated since the Middle Ages and is extremely useful because of its sweet aromatic roots. Unknown to some, the licorice plant is actually a legume, related to peas and beans, native to parts of Asia and southwestern Europe. It grows best in deep, fertile, well drained soil.
Licorice benefits digestion by reducing inflammation along the gut and encouraging bowel activity. This herb is the basis for most laxatives.
Since it does not raise blood sugar levels, licorice is often used as a flavoring. If you enjoy the taste of licorice use a stick to sweeten your cup of tea. Place a stick in your cup until you’ve achieved the sweetness you like. If closely supervised, the root can be given to babies to chew on which eases the pain of teething.
Licorice is useful if you are suffering from inflammatory diseases such as arthritis or eczema because it supports the adrenal glands. It will also, after a course of steroid medication help to restore your natural steroid production.
Heating licorice and honey makes a soothing syrup. It helps to relax chest conditions such as asthma and bronchitis.
Cautions:
- Licorice is not recommended for those with high blood pressure or heart disease.
- Avoid using licorice as a supplement or consuming as a food if you are pregnant. There has been research that has suggested it may increase the risk of preterm labor.
- Licorice, if taken in large amounts, can affect your body’s hormone levels of Cortisol and Prednisone, a related steroid drug.
- If you take licorice with medicines that reduce the body’s potassium level, such as diuretics, it can cause dangerously low potassium levels.

Any Way You Cook It
Scrambled, poached, boiled or fried? Any way you cook it, eggs have definite advantages and disadvantages. By in large, chicken eggs are a fairly healthy food that is included in many prepared foods and recipes. However, many health professionals and dieticians suggest limiting consumption because of the high cholesterol content. This theory of how the cholesterol in eggs affects the human body is still being investigated, but as with any food, moderation is the key.
The word cholesterol has become a part of almost anyone’s vocabulary over the age of five. Unfortunately, society has placed a negative connotation on cholesterol, and many people think of it as something detrimental to the general wellness of the body, especially in regards to the heart. In reality, there is good and bad cholesterol, both playing equally important parts in cardiac health. Bad cholesterol or LDLs (low-density lipoproteins) can be dangerous in high amounts, and can lead to risks associated with heart disease. These are found in foods high in saturated fat, such as fatty meats and butter. Good cholesterol on the other hand, are HDLs (high-density lipoproteins) and high levels of these keep the risk of heart disease lower. These healthy fats are found in beans, fish, olive oil and nuts, among other foods.
The newest trend in egg related health is omega 3 eggs, which can now be found in every major supermarket. These eggs are said to be higher in omega 3 fatty acids because the hens that lay the eggs are fed a diet full of polyunsaturated fats, kelp meal, and flax seed. Contrary to the push from those marketing the product, there is little difference between ordinary chicken eggs and omega 3 eggs, save the price. They are believed to be healthier in terms of cholesterol, but in reality are only marginally lower. However, they do have the advantage of the added omega 3 fatty acids.
Many people have gone to extremes with attempting to stay away from eggs altogether. This is not necessary, as modification is a good rule of thumb, typically two eggs per day. In fact, eggs have a variety of benefits, as they are high in protein and choline which is beneficial for fetal brain development, and are loaded with A, D and E vitamins. They are also said to be good for weight loss, as they have a high satiety index, keeping you full longer because they are considered a whole food. So next time you want that egg, go for it!

The Benefits of Vitamin C
Vitamin C almost seems like a cure-all drug for what ails anyone. Many products in the supermarket today contain some of the vitamin, and for good reason. There are many debilitating diseases that are prevented by using vitamin C to enhance the body’s immunity. Vitamin C is very popular in helping to protect cells, boost immunity, and is a very powerful antioxidant. In order to remain healthy, ligaments, collage, and tendons need Vitamin C. Not only that, it also serves as a treatment for the cold and flu. It has been proven to lessen the length and the severity of both.
Vitamin C has the ability to inhibit inflammation and is able to aid in the quicker healing of wounds. It can even protect gum tissues in the mouth. Vitamin C has also been proven to help lower bad cholesterol and raising good cholesterol. This helps to lessen the likelihood of heart diseases. If the body’s level of vitamin C is low, then the risk for a heart attack or angina is higher.
Certain types of cancer can be prevented by vitamin C because it is an antioxidant. This is because it protects the body’s healthy cells from damage due to free radicals. Stomach cancers and esophageal cancers are just two examples of what it can prevent. It does so by stopping the conversion of nitrites and nitrates into compounds that cause those two types of cancer.
If cataracts are a problem, then Vitamin C is an excellent solution. It can protect the eye against the two main causes of cataracts: ultraviolet light and cigarette smoke. If vitamin C is taken with pantothenic acid, it can help protect a person against migraines. For those who are worried about aging, vitamin C can be used as an anti-wrinkle product if it is used in conjunction with other antioxidants.
Given its anti-inflammatory properties, it might also be able to lower some of the inflammation brought on by chronic allergies. One study conducted in Brooklyn, New York found that vitamin C reduced histamine in the blood significantly after the patients took 1,000 milligrams of it for three days straight. Another study showed that patients with hay fever had a better ability to maintain the amount of air they could exhale if they took 2,000 milligrams of it on a daily basis.
With all of its wonderful antioxidant and immune-enhancing properties, vitamin C is great treatment for many health problems the world suffers from today.

Cancer Treatment and Fatigue
Most of us know what it feels like to be tired. You put in an extra long day at a stressful job and by the end of the day you’re tired, you may even use the word exhausted as you plop yourself down onto your couch. A good night sleep and by morning you are refreshed and ready to do it all over again. Fatigue is different. When you are fatigued you feel so tired that even a full eight hours of sleep or more does not make you feel better. People who are fighting cancer and undergoing cancer treatment deal with this feeling on a day to day basis.
General everyday tasks that you used to be able to accomplish with no problem suddenly seem daunting, even the simplest thing like taking a shower, cooking and even walking from room to room in your own home. Thinking may even seem arduous and decision making may seem like a thing of the past. Other things that may make you feel weak and tired are any type of change to your normal routine, your changing sleep pattern, a change in your eating habits since chemotherapy drugs have such a nauseating effect the last thing on your mind is going to be food. Another big contributor to fatigue is depression. Receiving the news that you have cancer is obviously depressing, not knowing whether you are going to be strong enough to fight, or wondering if treatment will work can be downright exhausting.
Fatigue is one of the side effects of cancer treatments that is very hard to treat. So many things are a contributing factor, as was mentioned above. One of the most common causes of fatigue due to treatment is anemia. Anemia is when you do not have enough red blood cells. Since it is your red blood cells that contain hemoglobin and it’s the hemoglobin that carries oxygen from your lungs to your tissues and cells, and when your body has very little of these oxygen carrying cells your tissues aren’t getting enough oxygen to do their work. This can make you feel tired or weak and make you look very pale.
Not only do you have to cope with the knowledge that you have cancer but you have to try and cope with your feeling of fatigue. It can be done. The first thing is that if your feeling fatigued ask your doctor about your red blood cell count. A simple blood test will tell the doctor if you are anemic or not, and there are treatments for anemia. Try eating small meals throughout the day from the four food groups, especially grains, vegetables and foods that are high in iron. Foods high in iron are eggs, red meat, liver and spinach. Make sure that you are adequately supplying your body with fluids. If it is possible try to plan naps into daily routine, being able to rest as often as possible will help you feel less fatigued by days end. Also, if possible try to take short walks or do some light exercise. For some people, light exercise decreases their fatigue. Try planning a small activity during the day. If you are regularly active during the daytime it will help encourage a normal fatigue at night, making sleep come easier.
There are certain symptoms that if you experience should be reported to your doctor or nurse. These are dizziness, feeling a loss of balance while walking, a loss of balance while getting out of bed, if you fall or hurt yourself, if you suddenly have a problem waking up, if you suddenly find it hard to catch your breath or find that you have an increase in your fatigue. Although cancer is a very scary disease to have to fight, try to stay positive. Keep as much of your normal routine as you can even if you scale down the time spent on each project. Don’t push your family members away. A close support system may be just what you need to push yourself through the hardships.
